Advertising was as crucial to business in the later part of the 19th Century as it is today. Col.
Albert Pope knew this when he founded Pope Mfg. Co. in 1877. Right from the start he put advertising in every appropriate
magazine he could. These are just a sample of the seemingly endless ads for Columbia bikes from the early days of the company.
Columbia bikes were also promoted to appeal to the ever growing woman’s bicycling
community.
Men
were not left out of the picture.
Pope made Chainless bikes from 1898 – 1922. These were heavily promoted as their
best bike.
